It’s no secret that I have a soft spot for Art Gallery Fabrics and I jump at any chance to work with the fabrics and the fabulous designers. So when Jessica Swift asked if I wanted to participate in a blog hop showing off her newest line Tallinn, the answer was a resounding yes!!! Here is the main blog post about the tour.
Jessica’s inspiration for this line came from her travels in Eastern Europe and I definitely felt that vibe translate through the fabric. A lot of the motifs reminded me of elaborately illustrated books that I had growing up, and I knew I had to incorporate that into my project.
I used a block pattern call “Tall Tales Block” made by Kate Basti, it’s really simple and wonderfully quick foundation piecing.
I’ve always loved reading and reading with our kids is a daily ritual (to be honest, my husband does the night routine which includes reading, because by the time night comes around I could barely read my own name) Never the less, I wanted to make something for our reading area that they could lounge on or imagine what kind of stories these beautiful books contain. (Sidebar: I told my kids I was making a reading pillow and when I was done, they said “That’s beautiful mom! How do you read it?” )
The “Reading Pillow” is 36 inches by 26 inches. I had a feather insert left from over from big couch pillows; the cover was completely destroyed by my dog, so this is a perfect new life for it.
I used every print from Tallinn line and let me tell you, there is a trove of fussy cutting opportunities, and I love me a good fussy cut!!
The colorful shelves were actually a last minute addition. Initially, I had just done random color strips mixed with background fabric underneath but it ended up looking messy and was taking away from the book covers. I MAY have stayed up until 3:30am sewing up the new shelves.
I quilted it using free motion quilting. Since getting a hang of it on my Juki, it’s been nothing but a great experience and I continue to improve (but such a long way to go still).
