Start Trek kindle/ipad mini case

Gosh, I can’t believe that it’s been almost a month since I last posted! It’s not that I haven’t been sewing, just never seem to make it to the blog, yikes! I’m back now, so all of you (all 5 of you that read my blog 😉 ) can take a breath, I know you have been holding it in since my last post.

Did you know that I’m a Trekkie? Well, I’m the “late to the party” kind of a fan since they didn’t air this show back in USSR (I dare you to read that phrase without humming The Beatles) where I grew up. But when I met my husband, I discovered my love for science fiction and space dramas! (Firefly, Star Wars, Star Trek, I love them all!) So anywho, my Number One and I have been watching Star Trek TNG almost every evening after kiddos go to bed, so I thought it was only fitting that I would make him something Star Trek related for his birthday.

I made an iPad Mini case, but as you can see it also fits a Kindle since the Mini wasn’t available for my photoshoot 🙂 For all of you non-Star Trek fans, “Shut up, Wesley” is something that happened in the beginning of the series and is said by Captain Picard (on the left) to Wesley Crusher (on the right). I actually love Wesley’s character (and hello!! Wil Wheaton is the bomb!) but many felt that he was quite annoying, and Shut Up, Wesley has been a running joke since. A long time ago, I came across this cross stitching on Flickr, so I thought it would be cool to combine cross stitching with fabric to make a case.

 

I had cross stitched the characters using this awesome free pattern by black-lupin on Deviant Art found here. The only thing I did different was added a communicator on Picard and stripes on Wesley’s sweater.
The “shut up, wesley” (man I love typing that, sorry Wil!) is made with Tshirt iron transfer paper, but I wish I did freezer paper stencil or silk screen printing (if I knew how) instead because the transfer paper left a shiny rectangle around the letters 🙁
The fabric for the back was a lucky find on Spoonflower called “federation ships”, you can see it here. Lining was a black microfiber I had in my scraps basket, left over from the racer wheel I made a while ago. By the way, Spoonflower? So dangerous! I am not allowed to look at it for at least several months, because I went a little bit overboard last time.
This was a really fun project to do, and I think my husband liked it, so score!
